To the ENT physician, the emergency may consist of simple infections, such as a bead in the ear, to complex ones, including allergic reactions or tumors that may block the ability to breathe or speak. To the patient and family, each of these is equally distressing.
“Our ENT staff takes pride in making our patients comfortable as we utilize the available tools to assess the situation quickly, express the findings to the patient and family, and come up with a plan that allows for a quick return to normalcy,” stated Dr. David M. Jakubowicz, Chairman, Ear, Nose, and Throat.
Frequently, ENT staff is called upon to assist the ER with airway issues that, if not quickly resolved, may lead to permanent injury or death. The ENT staff takes pride in being skilled in both medical and surgical airway management, and use the least invasive means to assure a safe return to function.
This skill in airway management is increasingly recognized by the New York City EMS units, as evidenced by the more complex critically ill patients that they are bringing to Bronx-Lebanon.
