Bronx-Lebanon’s specially trained ophthalmologists initially
examine these infants in the NICU, noting abnormalities
and the stage of ROP.
If left untreated, ROP can lead to

discharge, the newborns are monitored through regularly
scheduled visits to ophthalmologists.
Among the broad array of advanced diagnostic and surgical
eye procedures performed at Bronx-Lebanon are:
Cataract Surgery, using state of the art microsurgical and
phacoemulsification instrumentation, Dr. Mayers and Dr. Joseph
Zelefsky train residents in the most advanced techniques.
Cornea and External Eye Disease patients, including those
requiring selective transplantation of specific corneal layers, are
cared for by Dr. Mayers and Dr. Alex Traykovski.
Glaucoma care, including medical, laser, and surgical treatment,
is provided by Dr. Alix Fleury, Dr. Eulogio Gonzalez, and

are diagnosed and treated under the supervision of Dr. Nancy Blace.
Oculoplastic Surgery is provided by Dr. Blace, Dr. Relly Chern, and
Dr. Simeon Lauer.
Ocular Oncology and Uveitic Disorders are cared for under the
direction of Dr. Pearl Rosenbaum.
Retinal & Vitreous services, including conditions such as diabetic
retinopathy and macular degeneration, as well as retinal detachment,
are provided by Dr. Jonathan Levine and Dr. Isaac Moradi. Pediatric Eye-Strabismus-Ocular Motility Disorders
Pediatric Eye/Strabismus/Ocular Motility Disorders are treated
by Dr. Scott Afran, Dr. Judith Gurland, and Dr. Lily Zhu-Tam.
Special Diagnostic Testing, including Humphrey Visual Field,
Ultrasonic Biomicroscopy (UBM), Ocular Coherence Tomography
(OCT), Electroretinography (ERG), GDx Nerve Fiber Layer
analysis, Fluorescein Angiography (FA), Fundus Photography,
and IOLMaster is provided by Certified Ophthalmic Assistants
and Technicians, including Anna Marie Buruzan, COT, Melissa
Matthews, COA, Evelyn Quijano, COA, and Sylvia Ramos, COA.
Optometric Services are provided by Dr. Luz Amaro-Quirreza,
an expert in electro-physiologic testing Dr. Dennis Chui,
Dr. Tybee Eleff, and Dr. Lily Zhu-Tam are complemented by
the part-time optometry staff of Dr. Ben Freed, Low Vision
Specialist, Dr. Nancy Laifer, Contact Lens Specialist,
and Dr. Jacob Shafran, Optometrist.

| In addition to direct patient care, the Ophthalmology
Department is training the next generation of eye care
specialists. An Ophthalmology residency, under the
leadership of Dr. Jonathan Levine, and supervision of Evelyn
Mojica, Residency Program Coordinator, attracts applicants
from the finest schools.
“Many of our graduates then
continue their training through their acceptance into highly
sought after fellowships,” stated Dr. Levine. Bronx-Lebanon’s
Optometry residency, has grown to three optometry
residents under Program Director, Lily Zhu-Tam, OD.
The main clinical base of operations for the Department
of Ophthalmology is the hospital’s Concourse Division.
Satellite services are provided at the BronxCare Poe, Third
Avenue Practice, and Family Wellness Center. Emergency
is available 24/7.
