BronxCare Health System

Pediatric Residency Program

Dr. Molly Broder, Director, Pediatric Residency Program, examining infant.

The Pediatrics Residency Program at BronxCare Health System emphasizes primary care pediatrics and the comprehensive care of children in varying states of health and disease. Our setting in an underserved urban neighborhood affords ample experience with a wide variety of pathology, as well as the challenges of complex medical and social problems. Our exciting programs in research, quality improvement, adolescent medicine, and community pediatrics, as well as resources to refine cultural sensitivity and communication skills add special richness to the learning experience.

Most of the training will occur on the campuses of BronxCare Health System where residents will work with a diverse group of primary care and subspecialty faculty who are dedicated to their training and committed to delivering excellent patient care. As a teaching affiliate of Mount Sinai Hospital and the Icahn School of Medicine, we use their subspecialty resources to complement the extensive general pediatric experience. Our graduates are prepared to provide evidence-based family-centered care for a wide variety of patients in all clinical settings.

Our robust research curriculum for our residents has been in place for over 15 years, and many of our residents go on to present their research at local, regional, national, and international conferences. They also participate in Quality Improvement (QI) projects under direct guidance from faculty and QI leaders. In addition to research and clinical education, resident well-being takes top priority. There are monthly resident wellness sessions that emphasize exercise, meditation, personal finance, and many other topics. We also have resident retreats and departmental outings that help rejuvenate and motivate everyone in our department.

We are committed to training residents and strive to provide a challenging yet supportive atmosphere, where autonomy and supervision are in dynamic balance. Our residents have an outstanding record of success in achieving their goals, including subspecialty and primary care careers. To prepare them for success in their chosen career, we created a program with a wide range of training opportunities and individualized mentorships. Residents who complete the program will also be prepared for and are expected to successfully take the certifying examination of the American Board of Pediatrics (ABP).

In considering applicants, we look for personal qualities as well as academic credentials. We especially value an interest in working in an underserved community, a strong motivation to learn, a commitment to patients, and an interest in teaching others. Our residents are expected to be active team members, helping each other and contributing to ongoing educational activities. We recognize that residency will be a time of challenge as trainees pursue personal and professional growth; however, our resident-friendly environment encourages residents to grow and thrive into their full potential.
