In 2006, Dr. Amparo Ramirez first arrived at BronxCare as a resident in the Internal Medicine Program. A cousin, who years before had completed a similar residency, had highly recommended the program. “BronxCare was a place where I could truly make a difference in caring for a community in need,” stated Dr. Ramirez.
After finishing her residency in 2009, she accepted a job offer that allowed her to remain at BronxCare as a member of its faculty. She became an Attending Physician at BronxCare Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Health Center’s Franklin Avenue facility. Dr. Ramirez established strong working relationships with BronxCare’s physicians, nurses, and other staffers, while also teaching medical residents. In fact, the internal medicine residents gave her the Best Teacher Award in 2014 and 2018.
In 2012, Dr. Ramirez was promoted to Medical Director, BronxCare Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Third Avenue Medical and Dental Practice. Then, in January of 2021, she was further promoted to serve as the Medical Director of BronxCare Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Health Center, encompassing all its medical practices. In this capacity, she is actively involved in expanding and reinforcing patient services, as well as addressing the high incidence of heart disease, cancer, asthma, diabetes, and other chronic conditions in the Bronx community. Dr. Ramirez continues to see patients at the Third Avenue practice and works with the Department of Medicine leadership on ongoing performance improvement efforts.
“My overall goal is providing better preventive care through screening and early intervention, while also improving access to services and maximizing patient satisfaction,” stated Dr. Ramirez. Her priorities include offering more breast, cervical, and colon cancer screenings, and improving diabetes and hypertension care. She finds it especially gratifying to be able to treat entire families, including seeing the children and grandparents of some of her patients, along with their friends.
Prior to beginning her medical career in the United States, Dr. Ramirez served as a general practitioner in her native country, the Dominican Republic, where she attended medical school at the Universidad Autónoma de Santo Domingo. She decided to pursue a career in medicine after observing her parents working for the Social Security Administration, attending to people in need.
These days, when Dr. Ramirez is not at the practices, she enjoys swimming, cooking, and traveling, especially to the Dominican Republic where she still has family. And she considers the BronxCare network itself to be “like a family, too.” “I am especially proud to be part of a team that is truly extending itself and making an important health care difference for the Bronx community,” stated Dr. Ramirez.
