An expert in spine care, Dr. Marshall Kurtz, Medical Director, Division of Physical Therapy, specializes in diagnosing and managing musculoskeletal, neurological, and the rehabilitation aspects of painful or disabling illness and disease. He provides a full range of patient care that includes osteopathic manipulative therapy to help the body heal itself, trigger point and peripheral joint infections to treat muscle spasms and arthritic conditions, and electromyography/nerve conduction testing to diagnose disorders or muscles.

Dr. Kurtz first joined BronxCare in June 2008, and since then has implemented important innovations at BronxCare, including a Brace Clinic, which provides patients with customized braces, prosthetics, motor powered wheelchairs, and other equipment. As a member of the BronxCare's Stroke Team, Dr. Kurtz is also called on to manage the rehabilitative care of stroke patients. He also works with Orthopaedic physicians in developing a rehabilitation plan of action for postoperative patients.

In terms of his educational background, Dr. Kurtz received his medical degree at the New York College of Osteopathic Medicine. An internship at Long Island College Hospital and three years in the United States Air Force, in Louisiana (where he served as an emergency room physician at the base hospital), preceded a residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at St. Vincent's Hospital in Manhattan. He subsequently served as Medical Director of Rehabilitation at Bayley Seton Hospital on Staten Island and returned to St. Vincent's as Associate Chairman for Graduate Medical Education and Director of the Residency Program in Rehabilitation Medicine.

Dr. Kurtz is certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. He is a member of many professional organizations, including the New York State Osteopathic Medical Society, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, and Medical Society of the State of New York, in which he continues to be actively involved in planning and policy issues related to his field.

For many patients, rehabilitation programs are an essential part of their care. "We provide orthopedic and other patients the necessary follow-up to maximize their mobility," Dr. Kurtz stated.
