Dr. Matthew Furman, Chief, Surgical Oncology, is taking on an important leadership role in BronxCare’s efforts to address the high incidence of Cancer in the Bronx community. His goal of providing a “One Stop Shopping Approach,” where the full range of services are offered, from prevention to treatment and surveillance, is being achieved. “At BronxCare, we have an excellent team of medical and surgical specialists that are effectively integrating cancer care and achieving many positive outcomes for our patients,” stated Dr. Furman. He also looks to the new Cancer Center that BronxCare is planning, in conjunction with the Mount Sinai Health System, as a major milestone in establishing a world class level of care. “It offers the opportunity to provide the most up-to-date diagnostic and treatment services to a high volume of our patients, with the added benefit of integration with the Mount Sinai Hospital Center for the most complex cases,” stated Dr. Furman.

Since joining BronxCare in 2017, Dr. Furman has devoted his efforts to treating patients at the outpatient surgical specialty practice of the BronxCare Health and Wellness Center. He also performs many surgical procedures on patients presenting with such problems as pancreatic, colorectal, gastric, and skin cancer, among other diagnoses. Dr. Furman’s many success stories are a source of pride for him. A recent case involved a patient that came through BronxCare’s ER with a tumor that had perforated through the colon. Dr. Furman performed an intricate surgical procedure on this patient that involved removing the tumor and reconstructing the colon. Now, over a year later, the patient remains cancer free.

Cancer research continues to be most important to Dr. Furman. Following his graduation from the University of Massachusetts Medical Center, where he received his medical degree, Dr. Furman was awarded a Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship in Peritoneal Malignancy at this institution. He then pursued further research in Surgical Oncology as a Clinical Fellow at the University of Toronto, Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. In this position, Dr. Furman worked on several key projects, including the creation of a Provincial Cancer Center palliative case conferencing guideline, as well as the development and evaluation of a major oncologic database. He plans to continue his research at BronxCare, particularly in terms of the causative factors of cancer in relationship to an inner city population, as well as the benefits of preventive and palliative care in ensuring our patients are given every opportunity for success.

“My work at BronxCare is especially satisfying and rewarding, and I am confident that our team will make significant progress in the prevention and treatment of cancer for our patients and the community,” stated Dr. Furman.
