As Physician-in-Chief and Chairman, Department of Medicine, Dr. Sridhar Chilimuri's responsibilities are wide ranging and multi-faceted. Dr. Chilimuri sees both of these leadership positions as being complementary, building on each other in achieving high quality care, as well as patient safety and satisfaction. "We are the largest department at BronxCare, with 200 physicians, more than 100 residents, and 15 major divisions, which translates into our important and necessary role as the anchor for the hospital's other medical, surgical, and specialty services," stated Dr. Chilimuri.

At the quality of care and safety levels, Dr. Chilimuri views the consecutive A-Ratings BronxCare received for patient safety from The Leapfrog Group as a validation of the team effort now in place throughout the hospital. He also considers the complex neurosurgical and robotic procedures, new cardiology laboratories, and interventional radiology program, in addition to an expanding scope of outpatient services and facilities, as further confirmations of BronxCare's excellence.

Medical Education remains a continuing priority for Dr. Chilimuri. He has applied his considerable expertise in endoscopy and endoscopic procedures to the benefit of the gastroenterology and medical residents and fellows. BronxCare's Internal Medicine residency is highly regarded by the Accreditation Council of Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) and was recently selected as a pilot program for its new accreditation process.

Dr. Chilimuri first came to BronxCare as an intern in 1988, following his graduation from the ANDHRA Medical College in India. He was the first in his family to travel abroad. "BronxCare offered the opportunity to come to the United States and have a meaningful impact in a community that was at the epicenter of many serious and often devastating illnesses," stated Dr. Chilimuri. He subsequently completed his residency, as well as fellowship in gastroenterology, and then served in positions of increasing responsibility, prior to becoming Chairman and Program Director of the Department of Medicine in 1999, and Physician-in-Chief in 2013.
