As Director of Psychiatric Nursing, Elizabeth Benedito, MSN, RN-BC, is taking on the often difficult challenges related to caring for the Mental Health Population. Currently, Ms. Benedito’s wide-ranging nursing responsibilities encompass BronxCare’s Adult Inpatient Psychiatric Units, a Child and Adolescent Unit, and its Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP). In addition, she is also responsible for the Chemical Dependency/Opioid Treatment Nursing Services at BronxCare’s Life Recovery Center, Opioid Treatment Program, and Psychiatric Outpatient Practices. Her overriding goal is to enhance the Psychiatric Nursing Practice standards, while assuring comprehensive care along with an environment of safety for patients and staff. “Our Nurses have consistently demonstrated an ability to work as part of a dynamic, cohesive, and patient-centered team, and that is most important in the provision of high quality care,” stated Ms. Benedito. She attributes the success of the Psychiatric Nursing team to their ability and experience in responding to and caring for patients in distress.
It was in 1994 that Ms. Benedito began her 27-year BronxCare career as a Staff Nurse. She subsequently became an Assistant Nursing Care Coordinator at BronxCare’s Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), where her interest in Psychiatric Nursing was sparked. “Every day was a different scenario, and the crisis-related environment which often involves agitated patients kept you on your toes,” stated Ms. Benedito. Throughout the years that followed, Ms. Benedito’s career continued to advance. She assumed the role of Education Manager at the Fulton Division in 2007, orienting new nursing employees and providing ongoing training to existing staff. Ms. Benedito served in this capacity for the next 10 years before being promoted to Patient Care Manager for the Chemical Dependency, Methadone Maintenance, and Psychiatric Outpatient practices. In 2018, she was again promoted to her current position as Director, Psychiatric Nursing.
Born in the Philippines, Ms. Benedito is the youngest of eight children, with five sisters and two brothers. Three of Ms. Benedito’s sisters are nurses, an influencing factor in her decision to pursue a nursing career.
Ms. Benedito came to the United States because it offered the promise of a better future. Her ambitions were fulfilled by BronxCare and through her achievement of a Master of Science Degree in Nursing at Lehman College, as well as Board Certification in Psychiatric and Mental Health Nursing.
