During the past five years, BronxCare’s Neurosurgery Service has developed into a tertiary center that performs the most advanced and complex brain and spine surgery procedures. Its team of highly skilled and board certified surgeons, under the direction of Dr. Narayan Sundaresan, is capable of handling all head and spine trauma, as well as complex brain tumors, herniated discs, degenerative spine, and other related diseases of the central nervous system.
In addition to Dr. Sundaresan, the Neurosurgery team includes Dr. Ramesh Babu, a specialist in skull base and pituitary tumors, trigeminal neuralgia, and aneurysm surgery; and Dr. Richard Radna, a specialist in advanced minimally invasive and microneurosurgery of the spine. This team is supported by highly trained physician assistants, nurses, and administrative staff.
BronxCare is now a place for state-of-the-art treatment for stroke and cancer. The neurosurgery team uses minimally invasive, neuroendoscopic evacuation of intracranial hemorrhage, thus making BronxCare the first hospital in the Bronx to aggressively treat hemorrhages that were previously considered inoperable. BronxCare’s neurosurgery service is also a forerunner for using cutting edge treatments for malignant tumors, such as Optune® and NICO BrainPath®. Plans for the future include establishing Stereotactic Radiosurgery for treatment of brain and spine tumors, and a Comprehensive Stroke Center to offer endovascular treatment for stroke patients throughout the city.
At BronxCare, neurosurgery services are offered at the inpatient and ER levels (24/7), as well as BronxCare’s Health and Wellness Center and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Health Center locations.
“We have established a high performing Neurosurgery Service and, as a result, are projecting a 25 percent growth rate annually. We have also begun using the same state-of-the-art technology for stroke and cancer that renowned medical centers use all over the world, thus making BronxCare a forerunner in elite-level treatment.”
