As BronxCare’s Psychiatry Residency Program Director, it is my privilege to introduce a training environment that is academically rigorous and deeply rooted in service to the community. You will find that our mission of training residents to become outstanding and compassionate clinicians, innovative researchers, dedicated educators, and advocates for mental health is being fulfilled.
BronxCare offers a comprehensive four-year psychiatry training experience integrating a strong clinical foundation with a rich biopsychosocial and neuroscientific framework. Residents develop mastery in psychiatric diagnosis, psychopharmacology, and multiple psychotherapy modalities within a curriculum that is continuously refined in response to resident feedback. It ensures that education remains relevant, evidence-based, and aligned with evolving standards of care.
Training at BronxCare is truly transformative. Our residents care for patients on acute inpatient units, outpatient practices, the Comprehensive Psychiatric Emergency Program (CPEP), addiction services, consult-liaison psychiatry, integrated primary care, and community-based programs. This breadth of experience prepares residents to understand social determinants of mental health and work on multidisciplinary teams that promote recovery, dignity, and wellness for patients from nearly every cultural and socioeconomic background.
Our program philosophy centers on the holistic development of each resident. Training is targeted to acquiring clinical skills, and equally important, a journey of personal growth, professional identity formation, and leadership development. Our faculty is deeply invested in resident success, offering close supervision, mentorship, and a genuine open-door culture that encourages dialogue, feedback, and collaborative problem-solving. Wellness is a core value, supported through remote days, a dedicated wellness committee and wellness chief, and faculty-led retreats.
A signature feature of our residency program is the weekly Thursday Didactics Day, when residents step away from clinical duties to come together as a learning community. The day includes resident meetings with program leadership, shared meals with faculty, and a series of interactive seminars, as well as case conferences, psychotherapy and neuroscience teaching, interview skills training, professional workshops, and wellness activities. In addition, our progressive curriculum spans inpatient and emergency psychiatry, addiction treatment, child and adolescent psychiatry, consult-liaison work, outpatient psychotherapy, neuromodulation (including transcranial magnetic stimulation), forensic and geriatric psychiatry, and individualized electives at partner institutions.
Research and scholarship are integral to our identity. Residents engage in quality improvement projects and original research with dedicated faculty mentorship. Their research projects are often presented at regional, national, and international meetings. Scholarly activity is also frequently focused on community needs, health disparities, suicide prevention, and innovative interventions.
At BronxCare, you will join a close-knit, diverse, and mission-driven community dedicated to achieving mental health care excellence. We look forward to welcoming you to our BronxCare Psychiatry Residency Family.
