As Chairman of BronxCare’s Department of Anesthesiology, Dr. Dave Livingstone sees himself as part of a “proactive effort aimed at assuring that the OR consistently operates at peak levels, with patient safety and value generation of paramount importance.”

Originally from Jamaica, Dr. Livingstone first came to the United States in 1982 and, for the next 16 years, lived in the Bronx. “I saw, first-hand, how important quality and accessible care were for this community,” stated Dr. Livingstone. It was this experience that stimulated his interest in pursuing a career in medicine. He graduated from Hunter College and Stony Brook University Medical School and returned to the Bronx to complete an internship in general surgery at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine. A residency in Anesthesia and fellowship in Pain Management at St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital followed. Dr. Livingstone then became Director of Pain Management at the Long Island Jewish Medical Center, where he served for 17 years, prior to joining BronxCare.

BronxCare’s accomplishments in responding to the major health care needs of the community influenced Dr. Livingstone’s decision to become Chairman of its Department of Anesthesiology. “The opportunity to join an excellent medical staff with progressive administrative leadership was especially important to me, and my decision has proven to be the correct one,” stated Dr. Livingstone.

Throughout his life, Dr. Livingstone has maintained a strong desire to serve communities in need. He often spends his free time on medical missions to developing areas, such as Nigeria and Haiti. In fact, Dr. Livingstone first learned about the need for medical intervention in Nigeria from his father’s internist who had led many medical missions there. During his time abroad, Dr. Livingstone has also helped mentor medical students and residents. “When people ask me what I do on vacation, they laugh when I tell them about my different medical missions,” stated Dr. Livingstone.
