Since joining BronxCare as Chairman of Surgery in 2018, Dr. William Lois has moved forward with an ambitious plan to expand and reinforce surgical services, optimize patient satisfaction levels, and maximize operational efficiencies. “Providing quality surgical care in a safe environment and keeping pace with advances in the field must always be at the top of our agenda,” stated Dr. Lois. He is also actively involved in the medical education area, working closely with the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai to provide a “top tier” teaching environment for surgical residents.

At BronxCare and under Dr. Lois’ direction, a full range of General and Specialty Surgical Services, including Gastrointestinal, Bariatric, Surgical Oncology, Breast, Endocrine, Thoracic, Vascular, Urology, Trauma, and Critical Care, are offered. Advanced Laparoscopic and Robotic surgeries, and Reconstructive, Plastic, and Cosmetic procedures, as well as a Breast Care Center and Wound Care Center are also available to patients. “We have an excellent team in place and are consistently succeeding in achieving positive outcomes for our patients,” stated Dr. Lois.

A continuing goal of Dr. Lois involves streamlining the OR process and increasing its efficiency. As Chairman of BronxCare’s OR Committee, he has taken on a key leadership role in addressing challenges, such as increasing OR and Recovery Room capacity, improving patient transportation and follow-up, and eliminating scheduling barriers. “Working collaboratively with Orthopaedists, Neurosurgeons, Ear, Nose, & Throat Specialists, Oral Surgeons, and Anesthesiologists, in addition to our Nursing and support staff, has already made an important difference,” stated Dr. Lois. Another priority involves enhancing the Pediatric Surgery Area, and Dr. Lois is moving expeditiously in this direction. He also maintains an active surgical schedule, performing many Vascular and General Surgical procedures on a weekly basis.

Prior to joining BronxCare, Dr. Lois served as Chairman of Surgery at Kingsbrook Jewish Medical Center. There, he was instrumental in instilling a patient first philosophy, as well as in achieving high patient satisfaction levels and empowering the surgical staff.

Dr. Lois received his Medical Degree from Universidad De Navarra in Spain. He began his medical career in the United States at the Jewish Hospital and Medical Center of Brooklyn, now known as Interfaith Medical Center. Among his achievements are the design and patenting of a unique stent design now known as the “stented graft.” He is also the recipient of numerous awards for surgical excellence, community service, and teaching, and was recognized by the prestigious Castle Connolly Physicians Specialty Publication as among the top Surgeons in the nation.

It is Dr. Lois’ efforts in bringing surgical care to the poorest communities in Haiti that are especially noteworthy. For the past 10 years, he has joined with Howard University and led a surgical team in providing needed care to its poorest communities, including establishing a MASH unit following the 2010 earthquake. He is also now building a hospital in Northeast Haiti.

In looking to the future, Dr. Lois is confident that he can make a meaningful contribution to the provision of high quality surgical care at BronxCare as he expands this vital service to meet the major health needs of the community.
