Carol John-Carbon, RN, MSN, looks back on her close to 25-year nursing career at BronxCare as both a starting and advancing point for her. “BronxCare has trained and nurtured me, giving me the opportunity to do what I do best—caring for patients in the best possible way and collaborating with our staff to accomplish this goal,” stated Ms. Carbon.

It was in 2000 that Ms. Carbon first joined BronxCare as a Medical/Surgical staff nurse. She quickly gained the reputation as a compassionate caregiver and people person, clearly earning her promotion to Assistant Nursing Care Coordinator and subsequently Nurse Manager for the 15th floor Pulmonary Unit. Under her leadership, this unit became a model in terms of its highly empowered staff, key patient care initiatives, and high patient satisfaction levels. These programs contributed to many success stories throughout the years, a further source of pride to Ms. Carbon. Among these successes were the many patients weaned off ventilators and discharged to their home settings or transferred to rehabilitation facilities.

The COVID pandemic also presented a major challenge for Ms. Carbon. “We worked tirelessly and heroically in collaborating with our physicians and staff in caring for seriously ill patients, often having to take on the extra role as a substitute family member since no outside visitation was allowed,” stated Ms. Carbon.

In December 2021, Ms. Carbon’s BronxCare career further advanced through a promotion to her current position as Director, Patient Care Services, Ambulatory Care. She is overseeing Nursing practices throughout the BronxCare network; more than 150 RNs, LPNs, medical assistants, and patient care technicians are now under her supervision. Ms. Carbon has also become increasingly involved in improving the structure and standardization of the outpatient practices to maximize patient satisfaction. “We are continually striving to make the patient experience a seamless one from registration to the actual visit, discharge, and beyond,” stated Ms. Carbon. She also frequently makes rounds throughout the BronxCare network to keep staff engaged at the highest possible level.
