BronxCare's Medical Education Program

An Ongoing Tradition of Excellence in Graduate Medical Education

For more than fifty years, BronxCare has provided high-quality graduate medical education to thousands of physicians who now practice in a wide spectrum of specialities and subspecialties across the world. BronxCare sponsors more than 350 residents and fellows in 13 Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) programs and three training programs in Dentistry, approved by the American Dental Association (ADA).

Training is offered in Addiction Psychiatry, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry, Family Medicine, Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine, Obstetrics and Gynecology, Ophthalmology, Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Psychosomatic Medicine, Pulmonary Disease, Surgery, and Transitional Year, as well as General Dentistry, Pediatric Dentistry, and Orthodontics.

BronxCare’s commitment to graduate medical education is rooted in the fundamental belief that a well-educated, well-trained, and socially conscious physician will provide patient care that is medically sound, clinically sound, compassionate, and safe. “Our residents treat more than 50,000 patients every year and are skilled at addressing the challenges presented by an ethnically diverse, low income, and medically underserved patient population,” stated Dr. William Lois, Director, Graduate Medical Education, and Chairman, Surgery.

Residents receive excellent clinical training, and the learning environment for Graduate Medical Education (GME) is a constant and evolving process. As a result, hospital faculty is continually working to integrate residents to patient safety and health care quality. Residents participate in patient safety initiatives, in addition to Quality Improvement projects, including peer-reviewed scientific publications and presentations at BronxCare’s Annual Hospital Day.

“The strong commitment of our Administrative leadership to the Residency Programs has clearly helped us succeed in achieving the dual mission of providing excellent care and excellent medical education as evidenced by the high quality of our graduate medical education programs, house sta‡ff, teaching faculty, and patient care.”
