Nurses are a vital part of the BronxCare Health System. “Within BronxCare, our nurses are taking on a very necessary and most important role,” stated Patricia Cahill, MPA, RN, Vice President, Patient Care Services/Chief Nursing Officer. Across the continuum of care, nursing services are provided to patients using a holistic systems approach that enables the nurse to assess the full extent of a patient’s needs.

Nurses are at the bedside focusing on the needs of the patient in the emergency department, through surgery, and throughout their stay in critical care, stepdown, and medical surgical units, as well as psychiatric units and in the chemical dependency and rehabilitation programs. In the Maternal Child Health areas, nurses care for the entire family, as babies are born and when children are ill.

BronxCare nurses also facilitate the care of patients in many other ways. Nurses in the BronxCare outpatient practices are instrumental in the assessment of patients and adherence to their plan of care. Nurse Midwives and Nurse Practitioners are advanced practice nurses who collaborate with physicians. Care transition nurses are the needed bridge between the inpatient and outpatient levels, further educating and contacting patients following discharge and ensuring their follow-up is complete. Case Managers organize the details of discharge and Utilization Managers assist in the coordination of care under the patient’s insurance. Nursing Informatics also has a key role in the development and integration of the electronic medical record into the daily workflow of the hospital.

“All nurses are leaders, leaders at the bedside and in the board room, leaders who are influential in creating and protecting standards of practice and, ultimately, the patient.”
