Dr. Sridhar Chilimuri, Chairman, Department of Medicine, was selected by the United Hospital Fund for its prestigious Excellence in Health Care Award. This award, which recognizes Quality Improvement Champions, was presented to Dr. Chilimuri and honorees from other hospitals at a May 4th event.
Dr. Sridhar Chilimuri is Chairman of BronxCare’s Department of Medicine, its largest medical department with 15 divisions, 80 attending physicians, and 110 residents and fellows. In his leadership capacity, Dr. Chilimuri has overseen and initiated numerous Quality Improvement Projects that have positively impacted BronxCare’s South Bronx community, among the poorest in the nation.
BronxCare’s efforts to address Cardiovascular Disease are a representative example of the successful outcomes Dr. Chilimuri and his team are achieving. A Remote Blood Pressure Monitoring Program is a recent Quality Improvement Project. It is helping patients reduce the risk of Hypertension, among the major causes of Heart Disease. The more than 2,000 patients enrolled are instructed to properly self-measure their Blood Pressure at home. The measurement data is then seamlessly integrated into the patient’s medical record. It is noteworthy that BronxCare has received Quality Achievement Awards from the American Heart Association, a further confirmation of its success in implementing Quality Improvement Projects that effectively target heart disease and benefit patients and the community. Dr. Chilimuri is also planning to increase his medical residents’ participation in new pilot projects aimed at addressing the challenges heart disease presents.
Throughout his 38-year career, Dr. Chilimuri has trained more than 1,000 internists who are practicing medicine across the nation as Quality Improvement Leaders. Dr. Chilimuri is confident that the residents he is training now and in the future will be inspired to do the same.
In summary, Dr. Chilimuri is a true Quality Improvement Champion.
